HIRING A LICENSED CONTRACTOR
THE FOLLOWING LICENSE CATEGORIES ARE AUTHORIZED TO INSTALL ALARM SYSTEMS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA
EC: Certified Electrical Contractor. This person has taken the state certified unlimited electrical exam and is allowed to contract anywhere in the state for any electrical system, including any alarm system and all specialty categories.EF: Certified Alarm Systems Contractor I. This person has taken the state certified alarm system contractor I exam and is allowed to contract anywhere in the state for any alarm system or low voltage system.
EH/EI: Registered Alarm System Contractor I & II. The EH and EI license were issued under the provisions of Chapter 489.537, Florida Statutes, addressing contract work provided for the state or any county or municipality, prior to the change in the statutory language made in the 1994 legislative session. These license categories are being phased out and the ECLB stopped accepting any new applications for licensure under these provisions on January 1, 1995. Persons with an EH or EI license have a local competency card or occupational license for alarm system contracting which he/she has registered with the ECLB. He/she is allowed to contract for any alarm system or low voltage system in the jurisdiction where he/she has a local competency card or occupation license which has been registered with the ECLB.
EG: Certified Alarm System Contractor II. This person has taken the state certified alarm system contractor II exam and is allowed to contract anywhere in the state for any alarm system or low voltage system, excluding fire alarm systems.
EZ: Registered Alarm System Contractor II. This person has a local competency card or occupational license for alarm system contracting which he/she has registered with the ECLB. He/she is allowed to contract for any alarm system or low voltage system, excluding fire alarm systems, in the jurisdiction where he/she has a local competency card or occupational license which has been registered with the ECLB.
This license was formerly known as a “Limited Alarm System Contractor II”, but due to legislative changes made in 1994, the 5,000 square foot limitation has been removed. All applicants for this license must file evidence of holding a current occupational license or a competency card for the type of work for which registration is desired, together with evidence of having passed an appropriate local examination. In the case of a local jurisdiction that does not issue a local license as an alarm system contractor or does not require an examination, the applicant may show that he has scored at least 75% on an examination which is substantially equivalent to the examination approved by the ECLB and has at least 3 years of technical experience in the trade. The ECLB has approved Block & Associates (904-373-8421) as the provider for the alarm examinations.

EJ: Registered Residential Alarm System Contractor. This person has a local competency card or occupational license for alarm system contracting which he/she has registered with the ECLB. He/she is allowed to contract for burglar alarm systems in single family residential, quadruplex housing, and mobile homes and to fire equipment adjacent to or in the elevator shaft or designated construction area.
THE FOLLOWING LICENSE CATEGORIES ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO INSTALL ALARM SYSTEMS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA
ER: Registered Electrical Contractor. This person has a local competency card or occupational license for electrical contracting which he/she has registered with the ECLB. He/she is only allowed to contract for electrical systems (no alarm systems) in the jurisdiction where he/she has a local competency card or occupational license which has been registered with the ECLB.ES: Certified Specialty Electrical Contractor. This person has taken the state certified exam in the specialty category indicated on the license and is allowed to contract in the specialty category indicated on the license anywhere in the state. ET: Registered Specialty Electrical Contractor. This person has a local competency card or occupational license for the specialty category indicated on the license which he/she has registered with the ECLB. He/she is allowed to contract, in the specialty category indicated on the license, in the jurisdiction where he/she has a local competency card or occupational license which has been registered with the ECLB.
